Idylwood Presbyterian Church
Hosts Bone Marrow Drive

Drive held on the two-year anniversary of local child’s transplant.

FALLS CHURCH, VA – This Saturday November 16, Idylwood Presbyterian Church, IPC, will host a bone marrow drive and health fair in its fellowship room from 10am-12 pm.

The drive falls on the two-year anniversary of Jacob Osman’s bone marrow transplant and the four-year anniversary of the passing of Jacob’s older brother, Eric. Jacob and Eric were the sons of local couple, Leslie and Bob Osman, who battled ALD, a genetic neurological disorder made famous by the 1992 film Lorenzo’s Oil.

ALD, or Adrenoleukodystrophy, affects 1 in every 17,900 boys and becomes evident between the ages of 4-10. If not treated early, boys with ALD typically die within 2 years of the onset of symptoms. The only known cure for ALD is through a successful bone marrow transplant, and Jacob received cells from a 40-year old anonymous donor in the fall of 2011. Jacob passed away a year later from complications of graft vs host disease.

“Despite our outcome, the generosity of the donor gave our son a second chance,” said Leslie, Jacob’s mother. “This event will honor Eric and Jacob’s lives by giving those that suffer from ALD and other life-threatening diseases a fighting chance.”

Be The Match manages the largest marrow registry in the world and has provided training to those who will lead the drive at IPC. The process is simple and includes a cheek swab and some paperwork.

The fair will also include screens for blood pressure, vision, strength, stress, as well as information on diabetes, heart health and men’s health. There will be speakers to talk about allergies and the Affordable Care Act, as well as activities and door prizes for all ages.

As Bob Osman puts it, “The concept is simple – the more donors, the more transplants and the more transplants, the more doctors learn to help these children.”  IPC and the Osman family remain resolved to bring something positive out of this tragedy.
