The Scottish lass, walking from Helensburgh to Dunbar during sabbatical in summer 2022.

I wear a lot of hats…

For almost eight years, I called myself a “free-range pastor.” I wrote books and articles, I spoke at retreats and conferences, and I coached leaders. I loved this trinitarian vocation for a long time, but at the end of 2019, I decided I’d like to get on fewer planes in 2020. You may remember what happened next. No, I did not manifest a pandemic. Still, covid slowed many of us down and gave us an appreciation for rootedness, for relationships, for the ways that transformation happens, which is up close and over time.

These days, the free-ranger has come home to roost at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon, VA, where I work in a thirty-hour-a-week pastoral call. I still write and speak and coach though, just in different proportions than before. Read more about it on these pages!

“MaryAnn’s careful listening, generative questioning, and strategic nudging have helped me become a more confident pastor and leader. She is a multidimensional coach whose deep skills and nuanced perspectives are so helpful in these perilous and promising times.”

Rev. Lee Huckleberry, Senior Pastor
Jeffersontown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
Louisville, KY

The Blue Room

The Blue Room is a concept (and a reality) that’s been with me for a long time. It’s a metaphor for the ways we revise our lives to be more vital and authentic. You can read the story of that metaphor here.

For many years I’ve written a weekly newsletter called The Blue Room, which is now at Substack. In 2022, I expanded the Blue Room into a podcast as well—subscribe anywhere you get your podcasts (you may need to search for “blue room maryann” to find it).
